BRULE RIVER OPENER

The weather for opening days of the fishing season aren't for the faint of heart but can offer some of the best fishing of the season for those who are prepared to brave the conditions!  For many local families, the opener is tradition similar to family gatherings for Thanksgiving or Christmas.  The steelhead run begins in late March in the spring and extends through May. Fish that "overwinter" or remain in the river from the previous fall run are typically the first fish caught. Bright, spring-run fish start appearing in April and continue through early May.

Grandmas Marathong

GRANDMA'S MARATHON

Started by a local group of runners in 1977, Grandma’s Marathon has grown from just 150 participants its first year to now one of the largest and best-known marathons in the United States. Widely regarded as a world class event with small town charm, our race now welcomes more than 20,000 participants each June and brings with it close to $21M of economic impact to the region.

The racecourse, in a wonderful combination of serenity and excitement, runs alongside the quiet and scenic shores of Lake Superior before entering the city limits of Duluth where runners are welcomed and pushed to the finish line by a boisterous and enthusiastic throng of specatators. It’s a time when Duluth and the community throw open its doors to welcome participants from all over the world and introduce them to our race and way of life in northern Minnesota.

Glass blowing demonstration

Located in the Northwoods of Wisconsin is a unique, eccentric and eclectic glass blowing studio owned by the Vojacek family of Finnish descent. This is not your "run of the mill" studio. The outside architecture of the buildings gives you the first clue. Then, entering the work room we were greeted by Jim who was teaching his Grandson some glass working techniques. Watching them was a treat-passing down to another generation such a special art. Entering the display area was "at your own risk"-crowded with shelves of glassware and a cat climbing the ornament covered Christmas tree!, it was hard to see everything. Open by appointment in mid winter. Classes in glass blowing and demonstrations also available throughout the year.
